NetGear ProSecure UTM series
- UTM5, UTM10,
UTM25, UTM9s, UTM150
Q. Just installed my NetGear UTM. Now our web pages are
blocked?
A. Internet Site Filtering - there
are certain web site categories blocked by default.
Please review the selected (kicked)
Categories List.
You may wish to allow a specific web
address, whilst still retaining a matching
blocked web site category.
White list entries are therefore used to
allow such exclusions and allow users to
access that web site.
We have found the default list quite
reasonable for business use.
Q. Why is my business web site not
accessible after I installed my Netgear UTM appliance?
A. Some web sites may be as yet be
unclassified or it may fall under a category
which has been selected to be blocked.
Your end user should be prompted with a
NetGear web page (instead of the
targeted web site which is blocked). You
will notice the Netgear Prosecure logos and
more information on why such a page is being
prohibited.
The end user may be offered a link to submit
that blocked web address for (re) classification
or it should advise that end user that it has been
blocked.
Q. We have noticed new
information when presented with a blocked
page message.
A. Units we deploy, after
consultation, have had a customised page
inserted below the inbuilt NetGear UTM
appliance's automatically generated page.
After consultation with several computer
network administrators and selected end
users, they have asked for such support
information to be displayed below the
default NetGear appliances displayed page.
Such customisations have been put into
place, where we centrally
manage that sites IT services or where their own
internal help desk
have requested as such.
Q. Customised users messages for
NetGear UTM?
What are some examples that you setup for
end users?
We have added some or all of these items:
- end user local helpdesk support
contact details
This better informs your end users
and presents them with either a local help
desk (or our our centrally managed support
centre) contact details and not contact
NetGear direct.
- a link to your company's computer IT
policy
This reminds users of correct usage
policies and lessen the burden of
unnecessary requests to the help desk,
typically for personal and not work relevant
internet sites.
Such are examples were Computer
Services & Technologies tries to integrate
the Netgear ProSecure UTM appliances to your
sites specific needs.
UTM25 UTM9s
- load balancing and automatic
fail over between two internet links
UTM150
- load balancing and automatic
fail over between four internet links
Q. The NetGear ProSecure UTM25
and UTM9s and UTM 50 have two WAN
links. How do I configure these?
A. The UTM25 and UTM9s have two WAN links,
which can be setup for automatic failover or
load balancing. We can advise you on
how to or better still, with your
permission, remotely access the unit and
configure it.
Q. The NetGear ProSecure UTM 150
has four WAN
links. How do I configure these?
A. Same as above.
Q. The NetGear UTM25 and UTM9s
and UTM150 do these models do
automatic failover?
A. NetGear UTM25 and UTM9s and UTM150, if configured, should
divert internet traffic to the live
(up) internet WAN link. You have to
make sure that any customised protocols are
enable for both links.
Q. How can I only have certain
internet traffic switch over (fail-over) to
our secondary expensive internet link which
is an 3G wireless link?
A. Some remote sites use DSL as
their primary, with a 3G commercial wireless
as their secondary backup link.
In this case, configure HTTP and FTP
protocols only on the primary WAN link (and
disable "not enter" them on the secondary
WAN link protocol list).
Should the primary (cheaper least cost)
internet WAN link go
down (off-air), then only the enabled
protocols traffic (e.g. email POP and SMTP,
or remote access via RDP, Citrix),
will switch over to the secondary
(more expensive) internet WAN link.
In this case all user's web browsing will
stop.
Q. When the primary WAN link is
restored, why doesn't that link get
automatically restored and switched back
A. Once the primary WAN link is
back on-line, the NetGear's UTM will have to
be manually switched over to this primary
WAN link. At present we have been
unable to let it automatically switch over.
We are currently investigating this.
